Park Day!

_MG_7951.jpgSince getting my point-and-shoot camera I rarely carry my big, heavy SLR around anymore, but I had a portrait session coming up and decided to wipe off the dust and practice a little when we headed to the park.
_MG_8037-Edit.jpgWe met up with friends old and new and had a blast!

_MG_7955.jpgThe sun was a scorcher, but it didn't slow anyone down.
_MG_7993.jpgNext to the playground is a little grassy area and pond where the geese like to graze.
_MG_7995.jpg _MG_7990.jpg
I asked Rachel to pose for me and she happily obliged_MG_8021.jpg
There were children everywhere. How do you keep track of them all?
_MG_8001-Edit.jpg _MG_7992-Edit.jpg
The light was quite lovely under this pergola, so naturally, I asked for some models._MG_8043-Edit.jpgMy goal, at the park, was to come home with tired children. I'll tell you now that I succeeded after they ran around all afternoon. ;)
_MG_8060-Edit.jpgJust before we left the children found the stage area and decided to sing Father Abraham. It was such a hoot to watch. They sang and danced until they couldn't stop laughing.

Fielder Workshop

JJ.jpgLast week Jann and I had the opportunity to attend a landscape photography workshop with well known, Colorado photographer John Fielder. When we walked in together and said that we were Jann and Jan it became the joke of the class. Everyone who walked in after us was asked if their name was also Jan. No one forgot our names the rest of the afternoon.
_MG_9509.jpgWe started out in the classroom where we learned about composition, color, view, perspective, form, etc. We looked at some of John's work and also learned how he does his post-processing, i.e. makes his photos shine.
_MG_9523.jpgAfter a short break we headed over to nearby Bluff Lake for a little hiking and photo shoot. John carried around his little point and shoot, took some photos, showed them to us, and had us take some of our own photos.
_MG_9529.jpgLate afternoon storms are the norm in Denver during the spring. We were able to capture some pretty cool clouds in our photos.
_MG_9534.jpgAs we shot our photographs John came around to take a look and show us how we could improve our shots. I was told that I had too much sky in my photo.  Do you agree? I do.
_MG_9536.jpgHe then took my camera and shot this to show me how my shot could be better. Yeah, his shot was much better than mine and now I have John Fielder original on my camera!
_MG_9558.jpgThere were some fun colors on our shoot as well. I love the red and green colors together.
IMG_1841.jpgJann caught me in the act. I actually never realized that I lean back when I shoot. It's kind of funny looking isn't it?
_MG_9613.jpgI was trying to get this shot when Jann shot that photo of me.
_MG_9621.jpgTo get "the" photo don't be afraid to try out different angles.
_MG_9625.jpgWhen you lay on the ground you can get shots like this.
_MG_9640.jpgWith all the late snow this spring the trees have just started to get their leaves.
_MG_9665.jpgWe also worked on some delightful reflection shots.
_MG_9697.jpgThe excitement came when the sun was setting. There color on these trees with the sun shining on them was pretty amazing.
_MG_9733.jpgThere's not much daylight left.
_MG_9745.jpgAs we were heading back we saw some deer hanging out. They didn't seem to fear us at all.
_MG_9760.jpgSilhouettes can also make for some beautiful shots.
_MG_9764.jpgBeing out when the sunsets made me realize that I'm hardly ever outside when this happens. I think I need to get out more.
JJJWe, aka The Jan/ns to John Fielder, had a wonderful time. We learned a lot about landscape photography and it was great to be outside working on our new skills. You can check out some more phtotos HERE

Solar Eclipse

_MG_6351.jpg
Did you catch the solar eclipse last week? I had plans to see, then got distracted and completely missed it. The views from our neighborhood pool are just gorgeous, so I still took a few photos.
_MG_6353.jpg
It was a little cloudy, so I'm not sure what our view for the solar eclipse would been like anyway. The clouds made it even more beautiful at this time of day.

Anna My Model

_MG_4350.jpg50mm ISO 400 f/1.8 1/200
Rumor has it that the next Melius Cousins' Reunion is going to be in Colorado. This was a conversation which took place a few summers ago at the Melius Family Reunion. Apparently I volunteered to put it together here in Colorado for the summer of 2013. I don't remember this conversation, but was reminded of this conversation when we were in South Dakota just a few weeks. Does anyone besides Angela and Laura remember this conversation? No worries, cousins. I'm on it. Jared and I have a few ideas and we'll get this thing together, so you all better come. Another conversation we had was about photography. It seems that many Melius cousins have now upgraded to a DSLR, so it looks like a few of you will need a few lessons on how to use your new fancy cameras. Never fear, Camera Jan is here to help! Anna has kindly offered to be my model. Here are some camera settings to get you started.
_MG_4352.jpg50mm ISO 400 f/2.0 1/400
All of these photos have been taken from the same angle, but with different camera settings. The preference is yours when it comes to what look you like best. Don't forget to shut your flash off. I always aim to focus on a person's eyes. Normally that is what one would most like to see in focus. My shutter speed (1/400) in this photo is a bit faster than the photo above. This allows the shutter to click faster letting in less light, but also creating less movement blur. Does that make sense? If your subject isn't really moving much then your shutter can be a bit slower, however if you are shooting a soccer game then you would want your shutter speed quite a bit faster. Also, if there isn't a lot of light you will want a slower shutter in order to let more light into your camera.
_MG_4353.jpg50mm ISO 400 f/2.0 1/400
Since I have a toddler that doens't necessarily sit still all of the time I am going to need a faster shutter, so that her slight movements aren't blurry. When I'm indoors I try not to let my shutter speed fall below 1/100. At night that is a little more difficult. If I'm outdoors and it's bright and sunny my shutter speed can often be as high as 1/3500.
_MG_4354.jpg50mm ISO 400 f/1.6 1/400
_MG_4363.jpg17mm ISO 400 f/4.0 1/125
All of these photos were taken in our kitchen. I was sitting with my back to the door, so when Anna was facing me her eyes were capturing the light from those big windows creating catchlights in her eyes. You don't need a ton of light, but it does help to be near a window to use some of that natural light in your home. That's all for now. You guys work on your shutter speed and we'll chat about aperture or ISO next time and Melius cousins mark your calendars!

Randoms

_MG_1840.jpg
ISO 320 f/1.6 1/25
Here are just some random happenings in our home today. Breakfast is usually cereal and milk. This works out quite well when I am slow to get out of bed. The older children make themselves and the younger children oatmeal or cereal and I have a few extra minutes to get moving.
_MG_1842.jpg
ISO 100 f/1.6 1/250
This little girl woke up with a fever this morning. She was quite content to lay around on the couch most of the day. Behind her is our very large wall of windows with bright sun shining through it.
_MG_1846.jpg
ISO 100 f/1.6 1/00
Thomas is working on a little spelling. He's facing our back patio door giving some really good light to his face.
_MG_1848.jpg
ISO 100 f/1.6 1/100
This is my multi-tasking daughter watching a Latin video while knitting. There is light coming through from the back door, but it's still a bit dark. Having the aperture set at f/1.6 lets more light into my lens.
_MG_1860.jpg
ISO 320 f/1.6 1/160
After quite a bit of Vitamin C, Anna is feeling quite a bit better and got tired of laying on the couch. She talked Rachel and Elizabeth into coloring with her.
_MG_1877.jpgISO 500 f/1.4 1/125
By midday we are back in the kitchen working on math while the two little girls are napping. The light in the kitchen has shifted since the sun has now moved, so I bumped up my ISO to 500 and shot wide open at f/1.4 to let more light into my lens.

ISO 500 f/1.4 1/125
It was barely 40 degrees outside today. It's a good thing we didn't have plans to go anywhere, though that wouldn't stop this kid from going out like this and without shoes no less! (He tried that two days ago.)

Before the Big Storm

Blog.jpgLast week we got hit with a pretty big snow storm.  Just a few days before that I had a photo session scheduled at a park. I have to say that we were pretty lucky with the weather that day because it could not have been more perfect. This has got to be one of my favorite families. They are the kindest, sweetest people you'll ever meet. If you're on their good side don't worry because they'll have your back in everything. I was so excited when they asked me to photograph the entire family together. They are so much fun! Yes, I know there's a few of them blurred out, but that's because if I let you see what they look like I'd have to, you know, get rid of you. We don't want that to happen. I'll just tell you that they are every bit as a beautiful as the rest of the family.
B27.jpgIt seems like I've bee photographing Nate and Marissa and family for years now. Here is last year's session.
B13.jpgI should probably mention that whenever I photograph this family we always go to the same park. It's the perfect park really. It has everything and this tree has been on my blog a lot. Everyone seems to love climbing this tree.
B14.jpgI've photographed Michelle and her boys before and I love looking back at older photos to see how they've changed.
Blog2.jpgUsing this park as a backdrop for photos is fantastic because it has a little bit of everything and the light is always perfect at some part of this park.
Blog3.jpgThere's even a little dock for a water backdrop. What a beautiful family, right? Thank you so much for letting me photograph you guys! I had a blast.
