Jonathan

_MG_2829.jpgOur main reason for taking a vacation out east this fall was to visit some old stomping grounds, the old church in which my Lutheran Stud did his vicarage and field work while at the seminary,
_MG_2805.jpgand to visit our son, Jonathan's grave. While I thought I'd be an emotional train wreck when we visited, but it wasn't like that at all. We attended church that morning and afterward the children went out to the cemetery, connected to the church, and it was like a search and find. It didn't take long and they found Jonathan's stone.
_MG_2820.jpgThis year marks the 10th anniversary of his death. After beginning a quilt, using Jonathan's clothing, I finally finished it! It only took me 8 years. His stone hasn't changed one bit in 10 years. It has weathered many storms and hot sun, and still looks brand new; for that, I am glad. I am so thankful for the members at Zion Lutheran Church. They have sent us photos over the years and placed crosses, flowers, and other things on his stone. While those things may seem trivial, knowing that people still remember and think of Jonathan warms my heart and the thoughtfulness will never be forgotten. The people at this church are like a second family to us. They helped us through the worst of times and continue to be there for us.
_MG_2817.jpgOur children were pretty excited to find Jonathan's grave and see his picture on the stone. It was sort of like we were all together for the first time, even though we won't truly be reunited until we meet in heaven.
_MG_2807.jpgWe give thanks unto the Lord for He is good and His mercy endures forever. Amen.

Our 10 Year Old That Isn't Here

scan0007In the short time that Jonathan was in our lives he sure made the rounds, and we captured some silly moments along the way too!
Easter FamilyWe spent our field work and vicarage years in Corunna, Indiana. We celebrated Jonathan's Easter here.
15 May 24Believe it or not, Jonathan's friend Noah was born 5 days after him.
18 May 27 copy BWe had a lot of fun making the children smile. I'm pretty sure my Lutheran Stud is standing somewhere behind me making silly faces.

Oct.6.03-Sept.26.04 00017At the young age of 5 months Jonathan got to visit Mount Rushmore and then it was on to Washington. It was a long road trip from Indiana to South Dakota to Washington.
JonathanI'm sure this kid would have grown up to be a joker. My Lutheran Stud liked to make him laugh.
28A August 18 IThese two were best buds.
Oct.6.03-Sept.26.04 00040Jonathan even made it to a birthday party!
30 September 7Then, he and I took off on a plane by ourselves. We landed in Seattle for a wedding. He was quite a traveled little boy.

Today would be his 10th birthday. It's hard to believe all that time has gone by. My Lutheran Stud and I love to talk about what things would be like, in our wild household, if he was still around. Would he be an instigator or a problem solver? Would eg his siblings on or would he be the level headed one? We'll always wonder. There a lot of things we'll always wonder about but, we'll never have to worry about our chunky, chubby cheeked little boy because we know he is safe in the arms of our Lord Jesus in heaven. We miss him immensely, but knowing he is in heaven helps just a tiny little bit. We'll celebrate that 10th birthday in heaven someday. Until then, we just remember him in the photos we have and thank the Lord for the short time he was able to spend with us. Happy birthday, Jonathan.

8 Years

100_0104.jpgOur first born son, Jonathan, is buried in Indiana. We haven't been back to visit since we left, almost 6 years ago. I miss him. I miss being able to just walk outside and visit his stone.

Rebecca is our only child that knew Jonathan, but all of our children talk about him often. When I go out somewhere with all of the children we usually draw attention to ourselves though not on purpose. People stare at us like little children gawk at people and don't know any better. It's kind of funny. Sometimes people will stop me and ask, "Are they all yours? How old are they all? Are any of them twins? Do you really have six children?" When David hears someone ask if there are 6 children in our family he is quick to answer, "No, there's 7, but Jonathan is in heaven." That always throws people off a bit and then it gets awkward. We usually just keep on truckin' so we don't get into a long conversation with someone we don't know.

The children don't know Jonathan. They never got to play with him or see his cute little smile, but I think they miss him just as much as Jared and I do. I love that they talk about him often and at random times, and wish that he were here with us. Someday. Someday we'll all be together again.

Be Still, My Soul
Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul; thy best, thy heavenly, Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.
 Be still, my soul, though dearest friends depart
And all is darkened in the vale of tears;
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrows and thy fears.
Be still, my soul; thy Jesus can repay
From His own fulness all He takes away.
Be still, my soul; the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Jonathan

Jonathan
Today one of the most adorable little boys I know turns 8 years old in heaven.  While time passes here on earth I know my little boy is probably having a grand old time in heaven with our Lord Jesus. Though I wish with all my heart that he was here to celebrate with us I also rejoice in knowing he is safe in our Lord's arms. If you can't tell from the photo, Jonathan was pretty laid back. You could do almost anything to him, like stick and mashed potato container on his head, and he wouldn't get mad. In fact he enjoyed the attention of people laughing and smiling at him.

Jonathan1
Back in the day we used to take our children to get their photos taken at the Picture People. Our friend Chad, a fellow seminarian used to work there so we would go in when he was working. Wink, wink! I was just playing around with Jonathan when Chad snapped this photo. It has become one of my favorites.

Jonathan3
He was easy to please and make smile. What a ham! The Picture People was a great place. After Jonathan died they graciously gave us all of the negatives from every photo shoot we had there. We went in almost every month. I still have those negatives. I should probably have them converted or something. I scanned these old photos. That's why they look the way they do, but if you see them in print they are beautiful. Chad always did a fabulous job!

Jonathan2
After our shoot with Chad we headed over to visit with Andrea and kids. I think Andrea must have taken this photo. It was definitely a hot and humid July day!
Happy Birthday Jonathan. We love you and miss you everyday.

Happy Thanksgiving

...from all of us to all of you!  This is sappy but, I have to say I am incredibly thankful for the wonderful family that God has blessed me with.
Here's my Lutheran stud!
Our 9 year old, sweet, yet sassy, is Rebecca.
Here is our oldest son, Jonathan (7), who left us a way too soon.

 Our six year old is quiet and caring, Rachel.

 This is our wild and rambunctious five year old, Thomas.

 Our 3 year old, David is the family comedian without even trying.

Here is our 2 year old baby, Elizabeth that can't decide if she wants to grow up or still be the baby.

Last, but not least, the one year old baby of our family Anna, who may just become as funny as her older brother David or the princess of the family who rules the roost.

7 Years...

Yesterday was Jonathan's 7th anniversary in heaven.  On our way to church on Sunday mornings we listen to St.  Paul's children's choir singing Lutheran hymns.  The kids sing along and are getting pretty good. This particular morning Jesus Little Lamb was on the CD.  I got a little teary eyed as I was in line for my coffee at Starbucks, which I ended up getting for free, but that's another story for another time.  We sang that hymn at Jonathan's funeral.  The kids know this hymn like they know the Lord's Prayer.  They sang loudly and it was beautiful.  We made it to church where my insides were just a mess, but on the outside I just put on a smile and give out hugs.  Once we got home things were hopping, so there was no time to be sad, but time for happy thoughts and memories.  More on that day later.

Jonathan is buried in Corunna, IN at Zion Lutheran church.  Our dear friends at that church sent us pictures after visiting his stone yesterday.  It was so nice to know that he isn't forgotten. I love all the memories that people have shared with me about him.  Through the years we've even received photos  from people who have stopped by and visited.  It is so touching to know that people still think of him.  It is because of our faith in Jesus Christ that we find comfort in knowing that we will see our beautiful son again someday.   For now, we still shed tears and miss you dearly Jonathan.

"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."   Mark 10:14-15

Happy Birthday Jonathan

1A January 18 I 9 March 15 I

Today we celebrate what would be Jonathan’s 7th birthday. Has it really been that long? Some days I remember having him around like it was just yesterday. We miss you Jonathan and rejoice in knowing that someday we will see you again.

“And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.” (John 16:22)28A August 18 IIn memory of Jonathan my mom has done such an incredible thing. Many of you who know us may know that my mom makes jewelry and every summer she sells her jewelry at the weekend market in Edmonds, WA. Well she heard of a little orphanage in Thailand that was trying to raise enough funds to build a playground for the children. She decided to sell her jewelry and give 100% of the profits to this school. They were able to build a playground, as well as buy some much needed clothing, medications, and some candy for the kids. Here some of the photos from the project.

Here they are unloading the playground equipment and setting it all up. Then they had a little ceremony to give everything to the orphanage.

Aren't these children adorable?

I love this little teeter totter. I wish we had one in our backyard. :) <Samsung NV4, Samsung VLUU NV4>

They even built a little sign for Jonathan. :) My mom has decided to do this every year. She is going to raise funds for different schools in Thailand by selling her jewelry. If you’d like to help or would like to buy some jewelry let me know and I will get you in contact with my mom!

Memorial Day

While today is often a day that we remember our courageous troops who have fought for our freedom in this country we also remember all of our family and friends who have gone to heaven before us.
