Ants

We bought an ant farm for the kids for Christmas.  At Christmas time there weren’t any ants around.Ants  Then spring showed up for a little while and we started getting ants in our house.  Thomas immediately asked if we could pull out the ant farm.Ants2

This is what we did for Mother’s day! We pulled out the ant farm.  It’s a little different from what I’m used to.  This thing is a gel and also acts as food for the ants.  Jared is starting it out for the ants by poking a few holes in the gel.Ants5  Now it’s on to finding ants. The ones that were in our house seemed to have miraculously disappeared.Ants7The ants are hiding.  Do you like David’s outfit? Nice, huh? Ants8  If you just dig up some grass or weeds there is usually some ants underneath.Ants10Apparently from the directions you are not supposed to handle the ants with your hands. We follow directions well. (Note: sarcasm) Ants11You also should not mix species, so you should get them from one place. They encourage you to order ants online and have them sent to you to ensure that.  Again, we’re good at following directions.  What fun would that be to get your ants from the mailbox? Ants12The good enjoyed the magnifying glass to look for the ants.  How do you tell if the ants are male or female?  We found out that all ants are female.  Males are only made when they are needed for procreation.  Don’t ask me how that works because I don’t know.  That’s just what I read.Ants13Now Rebecca did this right by baiting the ants with a little twig and sticking them in the ant farm. Ants14   They say to put between 20-25 ants in there.  We’re on our way.Ants17Keep searching… Ants18Thomas loves this kind of stuff.   Ants19I’m not sure the ant really understand what’s going on.  I’m not sure that they like being in this little contraption.  Maybe that is why they are trying to escape.

I can't wait to see how it turns out for y'all. Hmmm... without a queen, will they know what to do? The ants, not the kids. :)

Please tell David that his BFF from Indiana thinks his outfit is just fine.
